In the immediate wake of the government introducing the new drafted Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has advocated the creation of an apex organisation for digital governance and to guide India’s data economy.
To monitor all data-related concerns such digitisation, monetisation, sharing, and storage, the Data Digitisation and Monetisation Council (DDMC) will be established by either changing the current law or creating a new law. The government has also suggested creating a Data Protection Board to address data-related issues, and the TRAI’s recommendations coincide with this suggestion. The DDMC is in charge of advancing India’s data economy, while the Data Protection Board is primarily responsible for ensuring compliance with the PDP Bill.
