The government has been urged by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) to implement a light-touch licencing system for over-the-top (OTT) communication apps.
The article continued by stating that OTT communication apps ought to pay telecom providers to use their networks. The trade group has also requested that the government clarify “communication services” and eliminate any uncertainty in the Telecom Bill, 2022. The action was taken shortly after COAI declared that it was creating a revenue-sharing scheme for OTT apps and telecom networks. The new telecom Bill’s unclear provisions, especially for OTT applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, outraged the industry.
