Twitter must obey disinformation rules: EU warns Musk

Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, was warned by Europe’s top official in charge of enforcing digital legislation that he must do more to combat misinformation in order to comply with EU law.

To bring the platform in accordance with Brussels’ regulations, Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner for the internal market, spoke with Musk via video chat and informed him that “there is still significant work ahead.” Breton linked to a lengthy remark on the competing Mastodon network after posting a brief, silent video clip of his videoconference on Musk’s platform, Twitter. Breton referred to the EU Digital Services Act, Brussels’ main internet regulation, and added, “I welcome Elon Musk’s declarations of intent to prepare Twitter 2.0 for the DSA.” However, he added, “let’s be clear: there’s still a lot of work to be done.
