Digital India Act will monitor Social media, Metaverse, OTT platforms

The impending Digital India Act (DIA), India’s digital regulatory framework, would apply to crimes committed on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook as well as in the Metaverse.

Additionally, the DIA will look into any content policy violations by OTT services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, including distributing false information or encouraging violence. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) is attempting to replace the current IT Act 2000 by the Parliament’s winter session, according to a report. The source claims that MeitY is “rushing” to finish the legislation, which will contain specific recommendations for the internet safety of women and children. All digital platforms, including social media platforms, OTT platforms, online apps, and web3 applications like the metaverse and blockchain, would be subject to the Digital India Act.
