Senior bureaucrat, Vivek Johri has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). He will succeed M Ajit Kumar who is completing his tenure. He is a 1985-batch Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officer. He is currently working as a member in the CBIC. His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Johri was earlier posted as a member of the board. His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. “Vivek Johri, IRS (C&IT:1985) takes over as Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) from today, December 01, 2021,” CBIC said in a tweet.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is the nodal national agency responsible for administering Customs, GST, Central Excise, Service Tax & Narcotics in India.
Johri would also be executing the government’s promised customs duty rejig, which aims to boost local manufacturing. The indirect tax administration is also reportedly discussing a GST slab revision meant to improve revenue collection.
