Shoojit Sircar’s directorial and Vicky Kaushal starrer Sardar Udham is a long, unhurried re-creation of a turbulent slice of India’s colonial past, going back and forth from Punjab to London, with a few detours here and there.
Sardar Udham, streaming on Amazon Prime Video, has already raised the bar quite high and film fraternity and critics are all praising the content and the performance of the stars. The facts that are laid out on the screen might not be absolutely accurate – a disclaimer at the start of the film admits as much although Sardar Udham is “based on true events” – but details that the two screenwriters Subhendu Bhattacharya and Ritesh Shah pack into the busy script are orchestrated to convey a sense of truth.
Vicky Kaushal, playing Shaheed Udham Singh, delivers his best performance to date, capturing the acute psychological dynamics of an ideologically driven man not incapable of grasping or expressing softer emotions.
Katrina Kaif, after watching the film took to her Instagram and penned what should be called an ‘honest review’ for Vicky Kaushal’s performance in Sardar Udham. Katrina wrote, “Shoojit Sircar, what a vision, such a gripping beautiful film, pure unadulterated storytelling. Vicky Kaushal is just pure talent, raw, honest, heartbreaking.” Hrithik Roshan took to her Twitter account to praise the work of Vicky Kaushal and consider this to be his ‘masterpiece’.
Though there is a long way to go, still seeing the response in the early days, it can be said that this movie is something to watch for and is all set to rule in the coming times.
