To advance its e-commerce goals, Walmart-owned fintech PhonePe intends to join the government’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) with a user-facing app. PhonePe is developing an unnamed hyperlocal grocery delivery app in this area.
In Bengaluru, PhonePe is now undergoing testing. It will compete with Zepto, Dunzo, Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and—most significantly—Flipkart Quick. The Walmart-owned financial company indicated its aim to support eCommerce at an ONDC meeting in February 2022.
“PhonePe will play the role of buyer and seller application on ONDC,” said Vivek Lohcheb, VP, of offline business at PhonePe. We will enable Grocery and F&B in Bengaluru during the first phase of the launch. Thousands of merchants will profit easily from ONDC.”
