In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) banned eight YouTube news channels, one Facebook account, and two Facebook posts for propagating false information about India’s public order, national security, and foreign relations.
According to the ministry, the restricted YouTube channels also had a combined viewership of over 114 Cr and had over 85 Lakh subscribers. The ministry claims that the intent of some of the YouTube channels’ content was to cause tension among India’s many religious communities. False assertions were made in a number of videos from the YouTube channels that were removed. Additionally, the prohibited channels were running fraudulent advertisements on their videos that were detrimental to public order, communal peace, and India’s international ties.
