Indian government is negotiating with Google Play to prevent lending apps from accessing user data

According to reports, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is in discussions with Google Play Store to prevent loan apps from accessing user data in an effort to curb fraud by such apps.

Sources within the ministry claim that some officials are pressing for broad limitations on such apps, while others think the problems can only be handled case-by-case. MeitY is reportedly thinking about legal restrictions to restrict app access to only the data necessary for their operations. Officials from MeitY are also looking into why these apps need access to users’ communications, media, and contact details.
