Despite the continuing debate over its Play Store billing policy, Google launched UPI Autopay as a payment option for subscription-based purchases on Google Play in India.
UPI Autopay, a feature added to UPI 2.0 by NPCI, allows users to set up recurring payments using any UPI application that supports it. With this step, Google said it hoped to expand the simplicity of UPI to subscription-based sales as well as grow the Google Play businesses of local developers. The action was made not long after the business was fined INR 936 crore by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for abusing its dominant position in relation to its Play Store policies.
